It’s OK to Have Feelings

During this time of transition, I have felt at times great moments of hope and courage, and other moments of discouragement, even despair. Sometimes when it is hard, I look at how my fictional heroes have dealt with transition.

I’m doing my Fall read through of “Fellowship of the Ring” by J.R.R. Tolkien. The fellowship passes through dark and ominous places like the mines of Moria yet also through incredible places of beauty like the tree fortress of the Elves of Lothlorien. They meet incredible obstacles but are also encouraged in unlikely places, just like we sometimes experience.

I’m encouraged too, that in the real life ministry of Jesus and the disciples, they felt hope and felt discouragement, that they pursued, however messily, discipleship of Christ, and in the process, were part of his ministry that changed the world.

I think then, that it’s okay for us to feel the up’s and down’s of this process. Though it may seem like a long road we have been on, there are moments of beauty and grace, like the encouragement of volunteers, staff, elders and others laying down their lives for each other and the congregation. The insistence of those who sing of God’s glory every Sunday at church and at home always lifts my spirits as I imagine the forces of darkness trembling at the sound of our voices united in praise of our Lord. I believe Jesus is always there in our midst, walking through these difficult and dark times while inviting our fellowship to moments of grace and beauty with him.

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30)
